Lauren West & Georgina Stoker reclaimed their women’s open National Double title, while Clinton Leeuw and Jaymie Haycocks earned their first national title together Sunday, March 9, at the Maryland Club in Baltimore.
The eighty-ninth edition of the National Doubles was the first to be held in Baltimore since 2010 when 125 teams competed. 140 teams competed this year at the Maryland Club, the Baltimore Country Club and Merritt Club. West & Stoker, who won the 2023 title and fell short in the 2024 final, entered the women’s open draw as the top seeds. West & Stoker progressed to the final with a 3-0 win over four seeds Tehani Detter & Radhika Cobb to set up a final against two seeds Meredeth Quick & Katie Tutrone. West & Stoker came back from dropping the first game of the final 15-14 to clinch the title 15-13, 15-12, 15-14.
“Winning the National Doubles title together two years ago at Germantown Cricket Club (Lauren’s home club) was an unforgettable experience, but securing the title again in Baltimore felt just as incredible and meaningful,” West said. “We knew the final would be a tough challenge, with Katie and Meredith being such strong players, but we stayed patient during the big points and kept our focus when it mattered most. We’ve had a pretty great SDA season with several strong performances throughout the year and topping it off by reclaiming the national title was the perfect way to finish.
The Maryland Club recently underwent renovations that saw the construction of the world’s only facility with three hardball doubles courts surrounding a bar area. The Maryland Club also recently expanded its membership to include women.
“Baltimore has a really vibrant doubles community, especially at the Maryland Club, which is known for hosting outstanding events,” West added. “They hosted an amazing women’s SDA event for the first time in October, alongside the men’s SDA event, so we got a taste of what was to come for Nationals. Needless to say, we were excited to make the trip to see what Andrew Cordova and his team had in store—and they did not disappoint! From excellent venues and thoughtful player gifts to delicious food all weekend and a fun Saturday night party, Andrew and his team went above and beyond to make the event truly special. A huge thank you to US Squash, especially Brian Donaghy, as well as the Baltimore community for continuing the momentum from The Cynwyd Club’s success with doubles nationals last year. It was exciting to see so many entries, with many new faces joining the tournament. We’re looking forward to future host cities building on these incredible accomplishments and continuing to fuel the resurgence of doubles squash.”
Leeuw and Haycocks, who reached the 2024 National Doubles semifinals, reached their first final together dropping just one game in the quarterfinals. A thrilling final saw Leeuw & Haycocks come back from 2-0 down against two seeds Steve Scharff & John Russell to win the title 12-15, 11-15, 15-13, 15-11, 15-7.
“To me winning the title was more of a relief,” Leeuw said. “We had been having a tough season with many close matches so I was relieved to win a tight one for a change. I love playing in Baltimore. I’ve played there a few times before and always enjoyed it. It’s a very knowledgeable crowd and Andrew Cordova and his members always take good care of us. Thank you to Andrew and his team and Brian Donaghy and US Squash for a very well run event and definitely looking to come back and play…probably in the 40s though.”
