Trinity graduate Vikram Malhotra returned to the Betty Griffin Memorial Florida Open for the first time since winning the first PSA title of his career in 2015, to claim his eleventh career PSA title, December 5-8, at Life Time Athletic in Boca Raton.
Malhotra, world No. 58, entered the $12,000 draw as the tournament’s top seed. The Indian international prevailed in an eighty-four-minute semifinal against Egyptian three seed Mazen Gamal 11-9, 12-14, 11-3, 11-9, to reach the final.
In the final, Malhotra dispatched Mexico’s six seed and 2017 champion Jesus Camacho 11-6, 11-6, 11-4 in thirty-nine minutes to win his eleventh PSA title in his fourteenth career final.
The 2019 Florida Open marked the sixth edition of the U.S. Pro Series event. With the 2015 and 2019 titles, Malhotra becomes the first player to win the event twice.
“I played my best match today and look forward to retaining my title in 2020,” Malhotra said. “After winning my first tournament on the PSA tour in Florida in 2015, this one felt even sweeter.”
