Philadelphia’s Dominic Hughes earned an unprecedented fourth national title of the 2017-2018 season, adding the Father & Son Doubles Open division to his trophy cabinet after a victorious run with his son, Ben, this weekend at the Field Club of Greenwich, Greenwich Country Club, Apawamis Club and Westchester Country Club in Connecticut and New York.
Forty-five paternal teams competed across five divisions: Open, Century, 17 & Under, 15 & Under and 13 & Under.
The Open division fielded a large twenty-team draw that saw three out of the top four seeds advance to the semifinals. After a five-game quarterfinal, the Hugheses notched a decisive three-game semifinal win against two seeds and 2017 finalists Rob & Robby Berner, 15-7, 15-6, 15-5. In the final, The Hugheses dethroned top seeds and defending champions, Charles & Henry Parkhurst, 15-13, 15-10, 11-15, 15-8, to capture their first Father & Son Doubles title. Dominic Hughes adds the title to his 55+ National Singles, 55+ National Doubles and Century Doubles titles this season, becoming the first male player in U.S. history to achieve four national titles in one season.
The 17 & Under division proved to be the closest of the tournament. Amrit & Deven Kanwal edged both Brian & Brian F. Leonard and Dana & Peter Santry in five games to capture a third consecutive 17 & Under title in their last age-eligible year in the division.
The 15 & Under and 13 & Under divisions both produced first-time champions. James & Jack Hewitt did not drop a game on their way to the 15 & Under title, defeating 2017 13 & Under champions Ivan & William Martinez in the final. Scott & Hudson Poirier dropped just one game all tournament, which came in the 13 & Under final against Jerome & Liam Trail, capturing their first title 15-12, 12-15, 15-9, 15-12.
