When it comes to playing on a glass court, players have to elevate their game. It takes a mental and physical shift as players battle not only their opponent but also the loss of energy as the glass absorbs the ball’s impact. The short hits are shorter, and the long hits are longer, resulting in the feeling of a different court altogether.
When it comes to playing on Team USA, individual players represent more than just their own legacy and achievement; there’s a higher glory at stake. Just as a playing on a glass court in front of active spectators and blinding lights requires a mental shift, the mounting pressure of representing the nation on behalf of squash takes similar dedication.
For players and spectators alike, matches on a glass court wield a totally different energy as years of hard work and dedication are put on the line with many eyes on the court.
“At the end of the day, we all work hard to get the chance to play our highest level of squash against the best in the world. I think players enjoy putting on a show and showcasing our skills when that is in front of a passionate audience,” says World No. 4 player Olivia Weaver. “The transparency of the court allows spectators to see every move, every shot and every moment of intensity, creating an electrifying atmosphere. For me, there is nothing better than having a packed audience while playing on a glass court.”
In a few short days, members of Team USA including Weaver, will take to the glass court yet again at this season’s biggest stage: the Tournament of Champions in Grand Central Station. Tune in on SquashTV beginning this Thursday at 2:45 p.m. for Amanda Sobhy’s match against Sivasangar Subramaniam as members of Team USA battle for the ultimate championship.
In the words of Dillon Huang, who takes on fellow Team USA player Timmy Brownell at the Tournament of Champions at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, “While you can feel like a pro on a normal court, on a glass court it feels more impactful. The sound of the ball hitting the wall is different, and it feels more like a stage with an increased audience presence. You want to play your best squash.”
Team USA needs your help to support their elite skills and thrive both on and off the court. Representing their country on the local, national and global stage requires daily dedication and mental drive.
