Julian Illingworth set the mark for the most successful career for a U.S. male singles player in the twenty-first century. The Portland, OR native won the National Singles a record nine times, in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014. In January 2012 he reached world No.24, at the time the highest-ranking ever for an American man; since 2012 no one has surpassed him. A top junior who notched three national junior titles, Illingworth played No.1 at Yale for four years and was a four-time All American. As a professional he captured twelve pro titles. He was a brilliant shotmaker, with a world-class backhand straight drop. He was on Team USA at the World Teams in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013 and at the Pan Am Games in 2007 and 2011, earning a silver and a bronze medal in 2011.
