Sabrina Sobhy and Khan Avenge 2023 Losses to Reach U.S. Championships Finals

Two seeds Sabrina Sobhy and Shahjahan Khan avenged their 2023 losses against Marina Stefanoni and Andrew Douglas, respectively, to reach the finals of the 2024 U.S. Women’s and S.L. Green U.S. Men’s Championships Thursday, June 13, at the Arlen Specter Center in Philadelphia.

Friday’s finals are free to attend at the Specter Center. Watch live streaming of the semifinals at 6pm on Friday, June 14 on ussquash.org/live.

The men’s semifinal lineup fielded two rematches of 2023 with both ending in a different result. 2022 champion and top seed Timmy Brownell opened up the evening with a four-game win over 2023 finalist and five seed Spencer Lovejoy.

Two seed Shahjahan Khan then dethroned 2023 champion Andrew Douglas, 11-9, 11-8, 11-2, to reach his maiden U.S. Championship final.

“I’m really happy with my performance and congrats to Andrew for performing well this week,” Khan said. “I’m happy that I performed well in those first two games which was really important. Those could have gone either way. I played well and I’m happy to get to the final. It’s going to be a good show against Timmy, we’ve played so many times in practice matches. It’s great that we’re both in the final and I’m hoping for a good match tomorrow.”

The two women’s semifinals produced decisive victories for the top two seeds Olivia Weaver and Sobhy. Weaver, world No. 6, ended Riya Navani’s impressive run to the semifinals 11-5, 11-4, 11-2 to reach her second consecutive final.

After losing against world No. 54 Marina Stefanoni in the quarterfinals last year, 2014 champion Sobhy put in a dominant performance to reach her fourth career U.S. Championship final. Just last week, Sobhy and Weaver clashed in the third round of the British Open with Weaver winning the match in a narrow five games.

“The season’s nearly done and it’s just a matter keeping that focus as best as you can and make things as efficient as possible,” Sobhy said. “I’m excited for tomorrow. I think the growth of U.S. squash has been tremendous as everyone can see. It’s cool to be back in the final after losing to Marina in the quarters last year. I’m just not going to try to think about winning and just trying to enjoy the last match of the season.”
