Shipley School Seeks Squash Coach

The Shipley School, founded in 1894, is a co-educational, college preparatory, independent day school currently enrolling 835 students in grades Pre-K through 12.  Located in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, the school is committed to educational excellence and dedicated to developing in each student a love of learning and compassionate participation in the world.

Position Purpose: The Squash Coach will be a valuable contributor to the continued success of Shipley’s Squash program. Under the direction of the Director of Squash and the Director of Athletics, the Squash Coach will lead a variety of team and individual activities and instruction.
Major Responsibilities:
  • Direct and organize MS & US matches during the Squash season
  • Coach the MS squash team and US squash team during the Fall & Winter phase & MS teams during Spring
  • Work as part of the squash team and the school
  • Travel to and from off-site locations (practice or contests) with student-athletes
  • Responsible for inspiring our coaches to assist our student athletes in reaching their full potential
  • Organize and deliver Shipley’s summer squash camp program
  • Restring rackets for School and Academy players
  • Recruit student athletes of all ages for application to Shipley
  • Instruct and demonstrate skill sets and techniques necessary for development and athletic achievement in the sport
  • Responsible for the organization of all sport trips, including postseason (MS and US Nationals), ensuring school guidelines are followed
  • Plan and deliver Shipley Squash Academy clinics all year round.
  • Help and assist in all US Squash sanctioned tournaments ran at Shipley
  • Deliver private lessons to our school students and academy players.

  • Demonstrates good sportsmanship and maintains appropriate conduct towards the student-athletes, opposing team, officials, spectators, etc.
  • Builds and develops strong relationships with Shipley students, families, community and alumni.
  • Ensures a positive environment free of hazing, harassment, bullying and intimidating language and behaviors – aligned with our Community Commitment.
The successful candidate will meet or exceed the following qualifications:
  • Have a strong technical, tactical and physical background in squash. Ideally, at least 5 years of previous experience coaching organized squash, preferably at a high school, collegiate, or professional level.
  • Proven track record of developing players both on and off the court from beginners to a national standard squash player.
  • The ability to draw on your own experience as a high level player or experienced coach to provide positive athletic development.
  • A demonstrated understanding of coaching the whole child in a holistic, supportive approach that motivates young people and colleagues in a positive manner.
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Able to work evenings and weekends in accordance with the athletics schedule to support the overall success of Shipley’s athletic programs.
  • Exceptional communication skills able to address and connect with everyone in the Shipley community
